Book Week sparks something special at Sorella Early Learning in Griffin: a love of making up stories, not just reading them. Creative storytelling activities let children take their favourite picture book characters and imagine entirely new adventures of their own.

This month, our educators have run creative storytelling activities that encourage children to become the authors and illustrators of their own tales.

Why Creative Storytelling Activities Matter

Inventing a story asks a child to plan, sequence and use language in a purposeful way, all while having fun. Early Childhood Australia notes that imaginative and creative play, including storytelling, supports language development, problem-solving and social skills in young children (earlychildhoodaustralia.org.au).

When a child tells their own story, they are practising the same skills they will later use to write one.

Creative storytelling activities also give children a safe space to explore ideas, feelings and “what if” questions.

Storytelling Activities We Love at Sorella

Our educators bring creative storytelling activities to life through:

– Story stones or picture prompts children use to invent a new tale

– “What happens next?” extensions to favourite Book Week stories

– Puppet shows where children write and perform their own short scripts

– Group storytelling, where each child adds one new sentence to build a shared story

These activities give every child a turn to lead, imagine and be heard.

Bringing Creative Storytelling Activities Home

Families can extend this creativity at home with simple, low-cost ideas.

Try this together:

– Ask your child to invent a new ending for a favourite book

– Use a toy or household object as a story prompt

– Draw a picture first, then ask your child to tell you the story behind it

These moments of creative storytelling activities build confidence, imagination and early language skills all at once.

At Sorella Early Learning, we are proud to nurture creative storytelling activities that let every child’s imagination shine. Reach out to our Griffin team to find out more about our programme.
